When my husband first proposed to me he had just finished navy Boot camp and was POOR. LOL So he spent all he could on a ring. Which I loved. He was sad he couldn't do Bigger and Better. I for one didn't care. I was excited to married him. But he promised to one day get a bigger one. Then the christmas before our 20th wedding anniversary he bought me a CARAT and a half Diamond wedding ring. He bought it a bit large and figured he would size it with me after christmas. Well I found the ring fit my middle finger. So I now wear both rings. Why? because I still didn't have the heart to take of my first one. So switching up for just didn't seem to work. But I now love wearing both my wedding rings.

Well I'm still waiting for my wedding ring, soon though :D Anyway every 10 years my dad got my mom a new wedding ring and she wore whichever one she felt like it. She tells me though that when she dies she wants to be buried with the engagement ring that he gave her when he proposed and she told me I can have all the other rings he gave her because that one means the most to her......cute!

I own only one the one I got married with. I love them and love looking at them and thinking about the love behind them. The only time I might consider wearing another is if I was doing something that was risky or rules prevented it (nurses sometimes cannot wear large rings).

You propose with an engagement ring, and then while planning the wedding the bride and groom go choose their wedding bands together. You only need to buy one ring to get engaged. The ring you put on the bride during the ceremony is the wedding band. If you already have a diamond ring that's been passed down to you, just propose to her with that and then later she can go find a wedding band that fits with it. Or if you don't think the heirloom ring is her style or taste, you can have those diamonds re-set in a new engagement setting. Any jeweler can do that for you.

My wedding set is very small and modest. We were very young when we got married and that is what we could afford with out going into debt. My husband is constantly telling me that he is going to buy me a larger one someday. But even when he does, I will wear it on my other hand. Nothing can replace the original. I love looking at it and seeing how far we have come together!

You propose with the engagement ring, then at your wedding, you put the wedding ring on in addition to her engagement ring. She can choose to wear both rings after you guys are married or just the wedding band. :) Congrats!!

First of all, you don't "have" to give her a ring at all. It's common and standard, but not required. Second, don't give her the wedding ring until you put it on her finger at the wedding. If she knows your financial situation (which she should if you're this serious), she knows you can't afford one. And another thing-- you can find a lovely ring that doesn't cost much by looking for clearance rings or thinking smaller. She doesn't necessarily have to wear her wedding and engagement rings together. Sometimes I wear my wedding band alone because my e-ring gets in my way.

Generally, you buy an engagement ring. It is usually a solitaire diamond, it is usually the size the groom can afford. The bride wears this, and shows everyone how great her fiance is for buying her a ring.
At the ceremony, the bride takes off the engagement ring, she can put it on her opposite hand, or give it to someone to hold, and after the ceremony, recieves the blessed by the officient wedding ring, and puts the engagement ring back on her finger on top of the wedding ring after the ceremony in a safe place.
I hear you when you say you do not want to buy a small crap engagement ring that might look weird against the wedding ring.
I would show her the family heirloom, she might hate it, you know. But if she likes it, perhaps she will agree to have a non traditional engagement ring. Lots of big semi-precious stones, instead of just one small diamond might be fine with her. At least the size of it would go with the more elaborate wedding ring.
You need to talk to your bride, she might be willing to not have an engagement ring at all, but even practical Rivers would have shed a tear over not getting an engagement ring. This is a tradition, and one of the most cherished ones. It is look what I got, and you should see the man who gave it to me, na na na na na! Time.
To me, time to save your money, tight budget, and lose some of the toys you have amassed and think of your tearful, dissappointed bride.

I think it will be fine to just give her the ring and then on the day of the wedding have her put it on again at the alter. Most people have a big fancy engagement ring and then the wedding ring is just a simple band that goes with the ring to compliment it and they can be worn as a set. So if you are going to buy her something new I would just get a band that is going to look good with the existing ring and she can wear both. I don't really think it's necessary to have the two rings, but I am not a very traditional type of girl.
